Veronicas singer Lisa Origliasso and former Australian Idol contestant Dean Geyer have called off their engagement, blaming work commitments.

The couple, who got engaged just three months ago, issued a joint statement on Thursday announcing their decision to go their separate ways.

"Our careers demand we be in different parts of the world now and in the future, and the pressures associated with this have forced us to make this very difficult decision," they said.

"We remain committed and caring friends, with love, admiration and support for one another.

"We would appreciate respect for our privacy at this time."

Origliasso, 23, and Geyer, 22, met at the ARIA Awards in 2006, when The Veronicas won the best pop release for their debut album The Secret Life Of..., and started dating in April 2007.

They have spent most of the past three months apart, with The Veronicas based in the US and Geyer busy with commitments in Australia.
