Review: Meet Dave
by Andrew J. McGlinn, Filmink, 10/07/2008Eddie Murphy is a true comedic genius. Over the years, he has churned out high quality comedy or action/comedy vehicles (coupled, of course, with a host of stinkers). He's been starring in films for over a quarter of a century and has even been nominated for an Oscar. In his later career, Murphy has often taken to playing multiple roles, and this only highlights what a versatile actor he is. In Meet Dave, Murphy takes on dual roles once again.
When a tiny alien race sends out an "orb" to Earth, its mission is to drain the planet of its natural nutrients so the aliens can replenish their own world. But when this "orb" crash lands and disappears, the aliens, led by their captain (Murphy), head out on an expedition to find the missing probe.in a human-sized spaceship built in the likeness of its captain.
On the surface, this sounds totally ridiculous, and it is. But give this film half a chance, and you'll find an undercurrent of warmth and emotion. Murphy is freakishly funny as the human spaceship. As he has to learn to walk, talk and smile, there's a complete innocence in his performance, and as the captain of the extra-terrestrials (a race that frowns upon feelings and emotions), Murphy is equally at home leading his tiny crew on a voyage where they begin to learn and commit to these strange sensations, boosting a sub-plot in which these odd feelings cause a mutiny. Meet Dave may not be one of Murphy's finest, but it could quite possibly be one of his warmest and purest performances, which is quite ironic and unique considering that his larger character acts quite robotically throughout.
